welcome to the wrap wait am i doing the welcome you do it you're the boss no you are back
thank goodness continue please founder a weekly podcast covering women's sports news
it's the return i've written i've written on the run sheet it's the return of the one and only the
greatest there ever was and ever will be the founder and the legend of tfab chloe dalton
welcome back friend we haven't even got to what what is happening around the grounds this week
because you have happened you're here i'm so happy i've happened i'm so happy i've happened
fred's happened fred's here he's here he's asleep in the other room oh he's so delightful he's so
lovely he's about a month old how's your sleep going oh he had a great sleep last night actually
so if you could just copy and paste that so we're feeling a little bit of the old sporting cliches
you know day at a time hour at a time it's your life becomes hour at a time you just suddenly go
into these
you just suddenly go into these
you just suddenly go into these
you just suddenly go into these
three hour cycles of living and it's so hard to plan ahead achieve a lot with like sometimes you
literally just have days where you do nothing at all besides just cuddle him and lie on the couch
and he feeds and sleeps and cries and then you're like oh it's 11 p.m let's go to bed and wake up in
three hours like it's so grim sometimes but it's actually the best thing ever and i'm obsessed with
him what a season what a season how good and i think you know you've got to embrace it because
this will all be over soon and he'll be asking you to borrow money oh gosh i better start earning
what have we got around the grounds this week the granny is set and we have a kangas v lions
rematch our paramatildas are world champs and michelle kang is leading the way again for the
key story we'll discuss a new report from wasserman about how growth of the wnba and nwsl
will result in maximum return for investors
you
smart people how good my name is chloe dalton and i'm back
joined by my co-host bez who thank you for carrying the team
oh that's a very loose use usage of the word carrying
no a big special shout out to ellie yeah and sarah for stepping in they were both epic and
yeah i'm really grateful for them helping me struggle through my technical challenges because
were there any yeah plenty i'm not the greatest
at this you nailed it and i'm very thankful for all the work you've done phil who's jumped in as
producer um and says and ellie for all allowing me just to spend some special time with riley and
fred so thanks team in some football news the paramatildas became the first ever australian
national football side to win a world cup last week how good is that first ever so good good
they defeated the usa 6-2 in the ifcpf women's global global world cup in spain
and spain is my favorite team and rockies are number one watching a tremendously successful
season they've done so well at football companies as a side not only in the environment but not
only food but also rozzie osmere get us in strong with women but veterinary women who
are looking at figure skating they made one of the biggest visits of the season with riley
the football club was struggled with they won 87 cases against roma in second quebec in 2018
for those migration issues for us how good was that well award-winning team and i look forward to
punish her send it over how good she really did do it all but it wasn't all smooth sailing
with the u.s getting out to a two nil early lead the paramotors only took the lead with 12 minutes
remaining but they finished strong with goals to ann marie uriarte and georgia bake off sealing
the win hat trick hero caitlin smith said after securing the world cup i think it's exhilarating
we've worked so hard and i think the feelings you can't really put into words at the moment
her coach kelly sturton said the team's loss in the final to usa two years ago
made the triumph even more meaningful and she told media every one of those girls deserve it
and all the girls back home deserve it as well we've done this for them we've done this for
australia and we've done this for para athletes in australia as well you can achieve this anytime
so well said i love that awesome work kelly and the girls two more little football things that i
was excited to talk about um sam kirk is having a baby also becoming a mom oh my gosh she just
wanted to be bleeding
the way can we talk you're gonna send some name suggestions through i could some feedback about
how to burp your newborn can we talk uh who's the baby gonna represent is that your question yeah
obviously australia well the issue is gonna be i don't know what their plans are have you been
letting on their birth plans yet not as yet no okay when we know though like are they gonna if
they give birth in england very confusing it's literally gonna have a choice of three i assume
it's a pretty good choice yeah just
mean the lionesses are not bad at football get to 20 years time and be like who's the best right
i'm playing for you yes i rate that big congrats to sam and christy very very exciting news and
my final little football one is the matildas are playing the she believes cup yeah so good
against america and columbia uh yeah japan and japan i think is that the four that's the four
i don't know how we got in there but i'm here for it so good great how good in aflw it's happening
it's a rematch
uh the granny teams are in north melbourne and brisbane lions are going to do a rematch of the
2023 aflw grand final the defending premiers the lions put on a display in the premiership quarter
aka the third quarter what is the premiership quarter why is it the premiership quarter
because it's you have to you have to win the third the third is like kind of like the deciding
quarter almost even though it's not really but it is i find it kind of weird so it's just because
well like the fourth quarter decides the game do you know what i mean though like it's like this
thing about the third quarter and i understand that it's very important for like momentum and
coming out of the long half time where you have to warm up again that's probably why they say it
that's a good point actually i haven't thought about that aspect of it there's a real momentum
stop at that point isn't there yes um so so it stands to reason that whoever gets them in momentum
in the third quarter will carry it through to the fourth that's the concept right i don't know if i
agree with it
um anyway sorry back to the lions against the adelaide crows they kicked four unanswered goals
in that premiership quarter to overcome a half-time deficit and secure a spot in their
sixth decider that's a pretty ridiculous track record gosh they've been good the lions haven't
they consistently good their third quarter burst was too much for the crows to recover from with
the final score registering seven goals 850 to four goals 832 dakota davidson kicked two goals
three from 14 touches which was a solid three goals eight fifty to four goals eight thirty two
in the second half of the season the leoINEs hit their fourth and the lions were the last to
either end of the season but they weren't that long behind them in terms of their lead on the
batting situation they were still bad at it in the two games against the lions that mark the
sels and the whiteone came in last in the second half and they deservedly got the win on the
three-way at six minutes just like we did with the angels this time and when they was back late at
sea or they just didn't have enough assistance what was it like that just i would say i think it was a
really good match and some of the winners i think it was a very good match so i'm hoping they won't
be able to play games for them but they still didn't have a good time this week and they were a little bit
out of the game on the ballpark but i think it was a good time i think they won by about a
It was a tall order.
It was a tough, tough challenge.
And I know we'll probably talk about the grand final situation,
but, like, there's a lot of interesting stats about teams
that lose a grand final the year before that then come back to win,
particularly in AFL, and I just think the Kangas are going to get the job done
after the heartbreak of losing to Brisbane last year.
I hope they do.
I don't know if I hope they do, but I think they will.
Not your favourite team?
Nah.
That's fine.
I won't go into too much detail on that.
You're allowed to have favourites.
Yeah, true.
It was 36 degrees in Melbourne on Saturday.
Warm.
That's so hot.
Whoa!
And the week off that North Melbourne had was pretty evident
in those very warm conditions.
Once again, Jasmine Garda, she is amazing.
25 disposals, 8 clearances, 6 tackles, and a goal.
And Ash Riddell, 27 disposals and 5 clearances,
were prolific in the middle.
Vicky Wall had a day in front of the polls, kicking three goals.
So North will host the Lions, as we said,
in the grand final for the second year.
And we'll be looking to reverse that result.
I reckon they'll get the job done.
Tickets went on sale on Monday.
So yesterday, if you're listening to this on Tuesday,
even though we're recording on Sunday, this is confusing.
Yeah, this is confusing.
But yes, tickets went on sale on Monday.
Yes.
If last year is anything to go by,
the venue, which only holds 13,000 fans,
will sell out within hours.
We spoke about this last week, Sarah and I.
So I, off the top of my head, had a punt that Icon holded 18,000,
which I think before the Renault's,
it used to hold about that.
Yeah, interesting.
Oh, because I guess that part has taken space.
That's right, yeah.
So 13,000, it sold out in an instant last year.
And we discussed the fact that next weekend at Marvel,
there is a dirt bike situation happening.
Yeah, there were some dirt bike people in the comments
who were pretty pissed off about you trashing dirt bikes.
I don't get it.
And I will never get it.
Anyway, talk to me a couple of quick questions for you.
We're recording this.
It's on Sunday morning because you've got something on tomorrow.
Oh, W Awards.
You do have the W Awards on.
Yes.
So I'd like two things.
First question, who will win the big one?
You mentioned Jazz Garner there.
I'm a big Jazz Garner fan.
I always back her in for that award.
Do they take too many points off each other?
Potentially, because Ash Riddell is also exceptional.
She's always sharing points.
Ebony Marinoff has had a huge, huge season.
Yeah, gosh, and Hatchie as well from the Crows.
Gosh.
I don't know who you pick.
I'll go Jazz Garner.
Good.
And you've been nominated for an award.
I have been nominated for an award.
Yeah.
The Jim Stines Community Award, which is actually really special
because it's all about TFAP and the work we do with community partners.
So a big one is Pushing Barriers, which is an amazing charity up in Queensland.
And so they work with refugee youth to connect them to the community through sport.
And so we partner with them with all of our merch sales.
So every piece of merch money is donated to that charity to support the amazing,
amazing work they do.
So well-deserved.
And there's four amazing Jim Stines nominees,
all very well-deserving of their nominations,
but you should win by a landslide.
Completely unbiased opinion to deserve it.
You're very unbiased.
Thank you, Freya.
I appreciate that.
And some cricket news.
Sydney Thunder's 21-year-old young gun, Georgia Voll,
has been selected to replace the injured skipper,
Elisa Healy, at the top of the Aussie batting order
after the captain was sidelined with a knee injury.
Voll will debut against India next month
in the first of three ODIs to be played against India.
Healy looks likely to return for the three one days
against New Zealand in Wellington.
That will immediately follow.
Talia McGrath will lead the side in Healy's absence.
She's had a bit of a rough run, hasn't she?
Plantar fascia, the knee.
And I want to, you know, 21 years old,
she'll be opening the batting with Phoebe Litchfield,
who's also a young star.
Elisa Healy, I mean, she's top, top shelf quality.
God, the youngsters are snapping at the heels.
Yeah, Georgia Voll, like, is the opposite end of the spectrum
at 21 years old, isn't she?
She'll be excited.
Probably very nervous, but excited.
She's enjoyed a huge WBBL season,
scoring 299 runs at a strike rate of 145.85 in nine innings.
Her Sydney Thunder team were the first club to cement their place
in the top four and have since been joined by the Renegades
and the Heat.
The final matches will decide which team joins those three
in the finals, with the Sydney Sixers needing a big win
over the Heat in order to make their way to the finals.
So, we'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
The finals and dislodge the Hobart Hurricanes from fourth spot.
So, it's finals time for the WBBL.
I feel like it's come around quick.
Super exciting.
They have shortened the fixture, haven't they?
It is, yeah.
It's a shortened season.
It's actually now in line with the men's season,
and I guess it gets it done by Christmas.
Yeah.
And they move into international stuff.
But the finals do start this week.
The knockout match, which will be 3rd v 4th, will be on Wednesday.
The winner of that will play the Challenger on Friday
against Second.
Challenger.
And the big one, the final.
Doesn't have as much drama to it, does it?
Will be on Sunday, which will be first,
which I believe is the Renegades.
They've sewn that up versus the winner of...
The Challenger.
So, make sure you've got three final games of the WBBL left,
and I believe they'll be in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Get there.
Get around it.
Get there.
In rugby league, the NRL has introduced
an annual women's...
Women's Magic Round starting next season
with the inaugural two-day event.
That's a hard word sometimes.
Inaugural.
Inaugural.
On my first day back.
Two-day event to be held in Newcastle.
Six matches will be played over two days at Hunter Stadium
as part of the expanded 12-team competition
with the addition of Canterbury and the return of the Warriors.
I'm keen to see the Warriors back.
Yeah, up the wires.
Up the wires.
How many Kiwi Sevens players are going to happen on the roster?
I reckon a lot.
And to be honest,
it's good on them because that's kind of also
what's happened here in Australia.
So I hope they go all right.
The Newcastle Faithful have been rewarded for their fandom
after a sold-out crowd of 25,782
attended State of Origin 2 this season.
In other exciting news,
the NRL confirmed that the women's State of Origin in 2025
would feature a match at Allianz Stadium for the first time.
The series will again open on the Thursday night
before Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium on May 1st
before the clash in Sydney,
two weeks later.
Newcastle will then host the series finale on May 29th.
So when we say the Thursday night before Magic Round,
we're talking about the men's Magic Round, correct?
The players are not then backing up for the weekend.
Which all happens at Suncorp Stadium as well,
so it's a big festival, the Rugby League.
Love that.
The New South Wales team will be looking for a new head coach
after Kylie Hilder confirmed she would not be seeking reappointment
after four years in charge.
Well done, Kylie.
Yeah, she's a good shift.
In some investment news,
Michelle Kane,
is at it again.
She can't stop.
Every time I see a post, I'm like,
oh, this is old news.
And I'm like, no, she's gone again
because she is a bloody legend.
We need to connect.
Pledging at you.
At Michelle.
At Michelle Kane.
Invest in T-Fab.
She pledged US $30 million to US Soccer
over the next five years.
So Kane is already the owner of the NWSL's Washington Spirit,
French top-tier outfit Olympic Lyonnais Feminine,
and English second division side the London City Lionesses.
And she won the NWSL's Washington Spirit.
And she won the NWSL's Washington Spirit.
And she won the NWSL's Washington Spirit.
And she won the NWSL's Washington Spirit.
And she recently made a significant donation
to the US Rugby Union after the Olympics.
Thank you, Alona Ma.
So good.
The investment will improve competitive opportunities
for youth players, expand talent identification,
and fuel professional development for female players,
coaches, and referees.
I really like that last part of it.
So crucially, the funds will help give more professional
development opportunities to an additional 70,000
female coaches and refs.
That's huge.
Huge.
And so, so desperately needed.
Absolutely.
I think.
Oh, sorry.
We're a bit out of whack.
You go.
You go.
Bear with us, people.
But yes, without female coaches and referees,
you know, if we're only concentrating on the playing group,
we're not really investing in the whole of game.
And I just think that part is so important.
Agree.
Great.
In a news release,
Kane said she hopes the donation prompts other donors
to invest in women's sports, stating,
I love this from her,
she can just drop the mic.
Every day of the week.
She's so intelligent.
Here she goes.
Women's sports have been undervalued and overlooked for far too long.
I'm committed to raising the standard of excellence in women's soccer,
both on and off the pitch by delivering the resources,
female athletes need to reach their full potential and surround them with the
professional sport they deserve.
I hope this investment serves as seed capital and spurs other donors to follow suit.
So good resources.
It's such an important word.
Vital.
It was indigenous round this week for the WNBL and the Perth links stormed home to beat the Sydney flames at the Bendat basketball center,
84 to 78.
I like saying that one.
Bendat.
Bendat.
It was the flames fourth straight loss,
despite a solid shift out from Kayla George,
who finished with 19.16 boards and two blocks.
Jade Melbourne led the UC capitals to a second straight win,
getting the biggies 73 to 60 over Geelong.
Melbourne actually struggled from the field,
shooting three of 11 from Devin,
but Jade did damage from the stripe.
Oh my gosh.
That's funny.
I got really confused because of her name.
Oh,
when I was writing it,
I was like,
they played Geelong.
Her name's Melbourne.
That's very confusing.
Cause I was like,
wait,
I didn't think I was talking about Melbourne.
Wow.
L plays.
Jade Melbourne did her damage from the strike.
Full name Jade.
Full name Jade.
She got to the line often and converted nine out of 10 free throws to finish with 18.7 rebounds.
And four assists.
It's great having these Opals back playing at WNBL,
isn't it?
Yes,
a lot of them spent some time in the WNBA.
Love seeing them back here.
And cool that they've had their indigenous round,
some amazing designs,
a few clashes in the designs.
Emily Bendigo spirit had to change theirs.
There's got to be some forward planning there guys.
A little bit of couple,
couple of months out.
Hey,
this is our design.
What does yours look like?
Let's plan ahead.
I reckon.
Improvements for all work ons.
Always learning.
We are always learning.
I don't have a lot of ground to stand on today after my fumbling.
Hey,
always learning in some awards and years.
I feel like we've learned a lot about awards in the last few months.
It's been great.
Yes,
we did.
We sure did.
I will get to that,
but it's been,
it's definitely awards season.
I think TFAP kicked it off.
We did.
Everyone else has followed.
Last week,
the sport and Australia hall of fame inductions and awards gala was held in Melbourne.
The big two awards were taken home by three amazing women.
Of course,
they were.
Of course,
they were the dawn award,
which is named after swimming legend at Dawn Fraser.
And his award is the athlete who has shown courage and bravery and has changed sport for the better.
If I was to say that to you,
probably Lauren Jackson.
Wow.
Have you read this?
It's rare that I do.
You just know stuff.
Of course,
it was won by the great LJ.
The 43 year old basketball legend told the gathered crowd that she competed in her fifth Olympics in Paris just a month before undergoing a knee replacement.
That's ridiculous.
We talked you and I probably at 3am in the 3am club during Paris because she did play some minutes,
but then towards the back end,
she wasn't playing a lot.
And I remember us having a conversation of like,
do you think she's not okay in her body?
Yep.
She needed a knee replacement.
Pretty crazy,
isn't it?
Far out.
She has ruined her body for her country and for the sport.
For the love.
Yeah.
So good.
And she also mentioned in that,
you know,
part of the driving factor was to have her boys watch her play at that level again.
It's very special.
So special.
And then the Don Award.
So named after Don Bradman.
And that goes to the athlete or team whose achievements have inspired the nation.
And that was won by the fantastic Fox sisters.
Who else?
Who else?
With Jess and Noemi sharing the honors.
Noemi said,
it's still really hard to find the right words to think of my name next to all those previous award winners that are not only icons of Australian history,
but also just sporting heroes for us growing up,
especially Ian Thorpe,
Kathy Freeman,
and around that Sydney 2000 Olympics.
So good.
So good.
So yeah,
our awards,
we haven't been back on air since that.
Oh,
wow.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was amazing,
wasn't it?
It was so good.
Like,
it was just quite incredible to see the hundreds of nominations,
the thousands and thousands of votes.
Like,
it was just like,
I think a really special opportunity to see how engaged our community was with the awards.
And I think that's something quite unique about T-FAT.
And I just love seeing it.
Yeah,
it was wonderful.
And it's,
it's only just the beginning and I can't wait to see where it goes.
Yeah.
So we will,
throughout 2025,
we'll be chatting about potential nominees.
So make sure you guys kind of start watching and thinking about who should be nominated in 2025,
because it will be bigger and better next year.
Absolutely.
Let's take a look at the key story.
In a bit of stats and research news.
Our favourite news.
It is absolutely our favourite news.
Wasserman's women-focused research brand,
The Collective,
released a report this week,
titled The New Economy of Sports Part Two.
The report speaks to how the growth of the WNBA and NWSL in the US
will result in huge returns for investors with team valuations to increase
by at least $1.6 billion with a B US dollars in the next three years.
That's it.
Three years.
Huge.
On average,
more than 60% of this growth is based on the new revenue from increased broadcast viewership
and game day attendances.
Spares some key areas that,
as the report points to.
Media.
So Wasserman estimates that the WNBA will see 32% viewership growth.
So they've signed a new US $2.2 billion media rights deal and the NWSL a 24% boost by 2027.
So in three years,
32% in the WNBA and 24% in an NWSL.
Huge.
In attendance by 2027,
the estimated growth in attendance is 48% in the WNBA
and 42% in the WNBA.
Huge.
Engagement research found that fans of WNBA clubs in general are 13% more likely to purchase merchandise from their favorite teams than NBA fans.
That's a big stat.
It sure is.
Big names.
In the men's leagues,
many clubs are owned by billionaire businessmen,
but a more diverse ownership model in the women's leagues allows for and encourages active investment and greater stakeholder participation,
which has resulted in celebrities being almost twice,
twice as likely to own WNBA and NWSL teams as the NBA or MLS.
Almost 40% of WNBA teams have a celebrity owner.
So good.
When do we get to that status?
Exactly when I was just thinking what sport are we investing in and what team are we calling the TFAP oranges?
I think you would die to have a WNBA team.
Yeah, it could be a little bit out of budget though.
We might have to start local first.
We are not that celebrity.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
Let's start WNBL.
Yeah.
Great.
Let's do it.
In visibility, big brands are lining up to be front of kit sponsors in both leagues.
Top NWSL clubs command US $1.4 million in average annual value, which is AAV, for the prime real estate.
And WNBA teams command US $1.1 million for the covered space.
So that's the across the front naming rights.
So good.
Those savvy investors understand that investment in these leagues and franchises,
not only increases player visibility, but their own brand's visibility in an ever-expanding marketplace
that, like we've spoken about, is loyal and committed,
with numbers showing women's sports fans are 54% more aware of the brands
and 45% more likely to consider buying from those brands supporting the women's game.
I can't even decide what my favorite stat is here.
It keeps getting better and better and better.
The report from Wasserman concludes by stating,
given the rapid growth of women's sports in 2024,
the landscape is primed for new investors to impact the future of the sector significantly.
By providing capital and resources,
investors can support the development of essential infrastructure
that will sustain long-term growth while positioning themselves to maximize future returns
and leave a legacy in the future of women's sports.
How do we invest?
I need to be a part of it.
I guess we're investing with what we do every day, right?
We absolutely are investing every day.
That is just...
We'll definitely link to that report in the show notes and in our stories
because there's some really great reading in there
and you should send it to everyone you know and tell the people to get on board.
And while you're at it, just send them this podcast.
Yes, please do.
Yeah.
And can you just give us a review?
I'm just turning this into a shameless plug while you talked about that
because we'd love if you could just give us a review while you're at it.
Send someone the podcast, send them the report, and that's your support.
That's your investment in women's sport this week.
That's how easy it is to invest in women's sport.
Absolutely.
Let's take a look at what...
Let's watch.
The WBBL is coming to a close with three huge finals to be played this week.
Keep your eyes on socials for the locations and times
because they're TBC at the moment.
But mark Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday in your diaries.
The decider will be played on Sunday.
Do not miss it.
It's granny time.
Granny.
North Melbourne and Brisbane will lock horns again for the 2024 Premiership.
For the first time, the match will be held in prime time this Saturday at 7.45pm.
A-E-D-T.
Do not miss this one.
You can watch it live on the Seven Networks, Seven Plus app, Fox Footy, and KO.
Everywhere.
The undefeated Benigo Spirit will host the UC Capitals in the WBBL at Red Energy Arena on Saturday night.
Tip-off is 7.30pm A-E-D-T, and you can watch live and free.
All of your WBBL needs are online now.
The Seven Series is back.
Oh, my gosh.
I saw the team announce the other day.
I can't believe it's already time to go again.
I haven't had much of an off-season, the girls.
No.
They're in action in Dubai next weekend.
This weekend?
This weekend coming, yeah.
Yeah.
Sorry.
They are back in action this weekend.
It kicks off on Saturday.
Australian time will be live and furious on Stairsport.
I feel like Sevens is furious.
It's really hard.
It's live and furious.
What are your memories of Dubai like, Fran?
Really, really hot.
Oh, gosh.
The hotel you'd stay in has the best buffet ever.
I mean, the Sevens was fun because we have had a lot of success in Dubai, but the hotel was just another level.
Yeah.
The eggs the chef would make for you.
Here I am thinking, I'm going to ask her about Dubai and she might go to a dark place and remember that she broke her arm there.
Oh, yeah.
That was traumatic, but I've obviously blocked that out.
She goes straight to the eggs.
Yeah, the eggs.
They were so delicious.
I miss those.
That's a wrap.
Welcome back.
It's great to have you back.
I missed you.
Great to be back.
Thanks for carrying the team.
Always.
See you all next week.
Bye-bye.
