Welcome to The Wrap, a weekly podcast covering women's sports news.
Bez, what have we got around the grounds this week?
Queensland have sadly, in brackets, won the first ever three-game women's State of Origin series.
The Aussie Gems, which is the under-18s basketball team, won back-to-back Asian Cups.
And Australian Mia Kreitzer has become the youngest X Games gold medalist in history at just nine years old.
What is with these nine-year-olds? They're absolute freaks.
What were you doing when you were nine?
Not that.
I think I was colouring a lot.
Like?
I was definitely jumping off gutters on my bike.
You should have been in the X Games.
For the key story, we'll chat about a new report that has revealed there is a huge demand for women's sports merchandise, but supply is not keeping up.
I am shook.
Would you believe it?
My name is Chloe Dalton.
I'm joined every week.
On the show by my co-host, Bez Morton.
We're recording on Gadigal land.
It sounds weird.
See?
I'm just a one-name person.
I'm like Beyonce.
Wow.
She is feeling it this morning.
Hey, the next two weeks, we're going to be having a break from the rap over school holidays.
But do not fear, because still every Tuesday and Thursday, we're going to actually be giving you extra athlete interviews over the next two weeks.
Tuesday, Thursday, next two weeks, athlete episodes.
Get them in your ears.
In the lead up to Paris Olympics and Paralympics, they're going to be bloody good.
Let's take a look around the grounds.
In a bit of rugby league news, I would like to take this story off the rap this week.
I was very disappointed.
All your fault.
In the state of origin, Queensland has made history after defeating New South Wales 22-6 to claim victory in the league's first three-game state of origin series.
The Maroons could not have asked for a better start.
Scoring their first try in the first...
First minute of the game, courtesy of Avania Politi.
And they were only just getting started.
They headed into the break with a 14-0 lead.
I just...
I had this feeling.
We knocked it on.
New South Wales knocked it on early.
And then as soon as Varnie crossed the line for that first try, it didn't have a great feel about it.
Again, the conditions weren't wonderful.
They were not wonderful.
And I just feel like origin is all about moments and momentum.
Moments and momentum.
I don't know.
Call me Phil Gould.
Please.
No.
You're way more intelligent than him.
Besides another spectacular full-field effort from Jamie Chapman to give the Sky Blues some points on the board,
the match and ultimately the series title belonged to Queensland.
Maroons forward Shannon Marto was awarded the 2024 Nelly Doherty Medal as player of the series,
racking up 448 run metres across the three matches.
That's solid.
Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder told me after the game,
Queensland were a much...
Better team than us tonight.
I know that this New South Wales team are better than what they just presented.
It's really disappointing.
And I know the girls are hurting as much as anyone else.
They just, they definitely had moments where they looked the better team.
They just couldn't finish.
Yeah.
And again, it's that kind of thing.
In those conditions, it was raining again for those that didn't see it.
If you're trying to chase a game, you know, once you get in front, it's very difficult to chase a game in the wet.
Yeah, that's very true, isn't it?
Because you start doing desperate things.
Like there was just a few loose.
There was offloads and more.
Next year.
Rough.
In hockey, geez, there's been some selection chaos.
The time of recording at the Australian Women's Hockey Team hasn't officially been released as yet.
But there's some, a lot of conjecture out there that Hockey Roos veteran Rosie Malone has been snubbed from the squad despite being fully fit to play.
So when this episode comes out Tuesday morning, the team will have been named because it's getting named Monday Arvo.
Yeah.
Oh, interesting.
But we think...
If there are more reports, it's sounding like that's the case.
Yes.
So news about the shock snubbing came last week by Tracy Holmes, who shared on X,
I've learned one of the world's great hockey players, Rosie Malone, has been excluded from the Hockey Roos team to be named next week for Paris 2024.
So Malone boasts a pretty impressive hockey resume, including at the end of last year being only one of five players in the world nominated for the International Hockey Federation's Player of the Year Award.
Seems very strange.
How are you top five in the world and you don't make the Australian team?
Very, very strange.
She was an Olympian in Tokyo in 2021.
She was a member of Australia's 2022 Commonwealth Games team that won silver and the team who claimed bronze at the World Cup.
She scored 32 goals in 106 matches for the Hockey Roos since making her debut in 2018.
And she's not missed a single game she was available for since that debut until now.
I didn't know that.
I didn't know that she hadn't missed a single game.
What's she done?
Is it...
Why do you point the finger at her, though?
I don't know.
I think she's run over the coach's cat.
Oh, God.
I hope the cat's okay.
Former Hockey Roo Kalini Comerford told ABC Sport the omission had shocked everyone in the hockey community.
She said,
It took me a bit to process it.
I was in disbelief.
She is a shell of herself.
I'm used to her being this bright, bubbly, extroverted character and I'm looking at a walking ghost.
I think it's odd.
I think it's a surprise.
It's believed...
That Malone launched an appeal with the National Sports Tribunal, but this was rejected.
So, this is going to be, again, really interesting to see how it all plays out once the team is officially named.
According to Hockey Australia's selection policy listed on its website,
selection considerations are a player's current form and performance and their past playing record,
as well as their physical qualities, technical skills, set-play skills and flexibility.
Also weighed up, according to policy, is team orientation and psychosocial perspective.
I wonder if that might be used in the reasoning.
Can you please explain to me what psychosocial perspective means?
No, but I'm going to take a stab that it's about your psychological capacity and your social interactions with your teammates in a high-performance environment.
That's a very good summation.
Thanks.
I'm here for it.
On to the next.
In Super Netball, the Adelaide Thunderbirds have handed the Melbourne Vixens just their second loss of the season, defeating them 73-58.
They flogged them.
Mm-hmm.
The top of the table clash saw the reigning champions take on the team who've not budged from first-place position all year.
The Thunderbirds were fierce in front of their home crowd, leading at every quarter-time break,
making sure their side remained undefeated at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in 2024.
So with just two rounds left to play in the season, the Thunderbirds are now just four points,
one win behind the first-place Melbourne Vixens, and it's getting very exciting.
Very close.
And a bit of football drama.
There's a few dramas going on this week, isn't there?
A bit of drama.
A lot of drama.
The Manchester United women's soccer team is set to be moved into portable buildings at the club's training complex for the 2024-25 season
to allow the men's squad to use the women's building while their indoor facilities are being revamped.
Last summer, a £10 million state-of-the-art women's and academy building opened on the Carrington site,
but according to multiple sources, the men's team will have priority access to it throughout 2024-25.
The move for the women's team comes after United's co-owner, so Jim Ratcliffe,
who is in charge of football policy, admitted that focusing on the men's side
meant he had not yet gone into detail on the women's team.
I love just the blatant disregard.
It's crazy.
Crazy.
There's so many layers to it, isn't it?
Like you see the change room stuff and then you see the fact that there's obviously other things going on at the club around the tree,
and then for him to come and say that so blatantly.
Give us the quote, because I love the language here.
Oh, God.
We've been pretty much focused on how do we resolve the first team issues.
So what number team is that, mate?
The women's team, don't we think?
I'm pretty sure they're the first team in that environment,
and that's been pretty full-time for the first six months.
That is actually quite disgusting.
Seriously?
First team?
Oh, my gosh.
Yeah, that has unsurprisingly not been well received.
That language at all.
Shocking.
According to The Athletic, the Professional Footballers Association, the PFA,
have been made aware of growing discontent relating to United's treatment of their women's team.
This is not a new issue at United.
Members of the women's team contacted the PFA in 2021 amid concerns over the conditions in which they're expected to work
and the level of commitment from those in charge.
Captain Katie Zellum has departed on a free transfer,
as has Lucia Garcia, while star goalkeeper Mary Earps is closing in,
on a move to PSG.
That says enough in itself, doesn't it?
And I think what's one of the most disappointing things about this whole situation,
and look, speaking from someone who worked out of Demountables at the Waratahs,
mind you, that was all of us, but for a good couple of years because we were getting a new facility built.
I think when I started hearing about this,
so they had a 10 million pound state-of-the-art women's and academies building.
So for me, that's like, so we're talking,
$25 million.
It must be a pretty decent sized building.
I'd say so.
If you can't rotate three squads through that building,
then you're not trying hard enough.
Well, and if it's already been made for the women in the academy,
it's already catering for two, right?
So you're just having to,
but it's like this idea that the men could not possibly have to share facilities.
Absolutely not.
Like they need to have whatever they need whenever they want it and everyone else suffers.
It's just gross.
Yeah, it's quite mind-blowing.
I just,
and obviously Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner, is just clueless.
I can't stand him.
First team issues, never met him, not a fan, not a fan.
But anyway, for all those United fans out there,
and one of my dear friends is a very big United fan,
I feel for you because it must be really disappointing to see the way the club is treating the women's game.
And to have to change the club you support.
To Chelsea, over her dead body.
In some X games.
In some X games news.
So back on the skateboard, this is mind-blowing.
So this is not me jumping off gutters as a nine-year-old.
I think I popped a few tires.
It's pretty radical.
That's rad.
Anyway, Australian Mia Kreitzer is way more radical than I have ever been.
She became the youngest X Games gold medalist in history at just nine years old.
Nine.
So what is that?
She's in year three.
Is that what it is?
I think so.
Freida's nine.
She's in year four.
We need.
Freida's young for a year.
We need.
Just in case anyone's wondering.
For long-term listeners, they'll know Freida.
They do know Freida.
Because she used to ask questions on the athlete interviews.
That's right.
So we need to get one of these young kids on here.
Because we've had Chloe Cavell on a couple of years ago.
She's now 13, 14, trying to vie for a spot in the Olympics.
Chloe the Flow.
I think that team's also being announced today.
Oh, I saw so many exciting announcements, isn't there?
There's a lot of announcements.
But I'd love to get one of these nine-year-olds on.
Probably maybe an adult who can speak about the nine-year-olds.
Let's just let the nine-year-old have at it.
Yeah.
Make sure we've got lots of lollies.
Get them real pumped up and let them go to town.
I want to know, is it because their body is so tiny that they can spin more rapidly
and do more things in the air?
Is it a physics thing?
I think it's a combination of physics and also a complete lack of fear
and awareness that you could die.
Yeah, because if I think about now as an adult going on –
I used to love roller coasters and things.
Now I go on a roller coaster.
It's not the same experience.
I think this is probably quite disrespectful.
It's not disrespectful to compare their skill to going on a roller coaster
because these kids are epic.
But you get what I'm saying about the fear thing?
Yeah, we're talking about biological development of the brain, right?
It's the amygdala.
Is that the one?
Nice.
Is that the one?
Yeah.
Excellent.
So that part of your brain actually doesn't develop until you're a teenager properly.
So you can do all the sick tricks.
Pretty much.
Great.
I'm here for your brain science every week.
Brain science.
Anyway, let's get back to Mia.
Yeah.
So for those of you that don't know, the X Games is a series of action sport events
that include skateboarding, BMX, and motocross events.
It's won the Women's Skateboard Vert Best Trick by landing a double revolution 720
on the second of her five attempts to move into first place.
So good.
She did have a little nervous weight.
So fellow Aussie Arisa True had a few cracks at a 900.
Which she recently did.
Yeah.
So this is – obviously couldn't – just couldn't pull it off.
But she's now in this competition mode.
So yeah, I loved it.
Kretzer afterwards.
As any nine-year-old would say, I feel so happy.
It's just amazing.
It's crazy.
Great.
I'm surprised there wasn't a stoked in there.
Stoked.
That's a bit more surfer though, isn't it, than skater?
Nah, I reckon all extreme sports.
She was stoked.
I know she was.
In basketball news, majority ownership of Australia's Women's Basketball League,
the WNBL, is changing hands.
This is big news actually.
The Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate,
WCGS – it took my brain a while to get that acronym out.
The National Basketball League, the NBL,
have formed a consortium to acquire a majority interest in the WNBL
following the completion of the 2024-25 season.
Lots of acronyms there.
Well done.
Yeah, thank you.
Basketball Australia will maintain a minority interest in the league.
According to ESPN,
the deal will see the consortium acquire approximately 75% of the WNBL.
That's definitely a majority share.
Yeah, and some big decision-making power.
Good math.
Robin Denham, founder of the WCGS, said,
Women's basketball in Australia has a phenomenal history and an even brighter future.
We are excited to be a major part of the syndicate that will guide the future direction
as well as provide the right level of support and investment needed in the sport for decades to come.
There is much work to be done to transform the league into a platform that our amazing female players,
clubs, fans and all involved richly deserve.
Robin is also the current Tesla chair.
Earlier in 2024, WCG assumed the majority ownership share of Hoops Capital.
So Hoops is the owner of Sydney Kings and the Sydney Flames.
And under the new ownership structure,
the consortium will take control of the league with the NBL to operate the WNBL from April 2nd, 2025.
So Larry Kesselman is the NBL owner.
And he said,
We are proud to be part of a group that will now have an opportunity to rethink what the best,
best version of the WNBL can look like and set the direction for the future as we did for the NBL.
We believe this is a truly exciting proposition for us, the players, the fans and everyone involved.
I think this is a great step.
I think we've seen the success of the WNBA.
I think it's often hard to compare American sport to Australian sport.
We know that in terms of population and things like that, it's tricky to compete.
But I think what Larry and the owners have done with the redirection of the NBL,
has been exceptional compared to it's had a real lull and plateau over prior years.
I think if they can bring that into the WNBL,
these are some of the best athletes in the world who deserve a world-class league and have not been getting that.
And I think what's interesting here is,
you know,
we've seen this,
like you said,
in a few different sports where,
you know,
someone comes in and runs the men's and women's competition together.
I think that's got to be the best way.
You've got to treat them the same,
give them the same opportunity.
And I hope that's what comes of this of this purchase.
And I think what the WNBL actually offers is,
I think we saw Mercedes Russell come over here because it runs at a different time to the WNBA.
We could almost be that second competition of choice rather than having to go to Russia or China or somewhere not as attractive as beautiful Australia.
We could actually see a lot of these American players coming down to play in the WNBL if we really invest in it.
Yeah,
for sure.
I think I do think the salaries are going to need to jump a lot in order for them to be,
I mean,
to sunshine,
sunshine helps.
Everyone gets a free Tesla.
Great.
Surely sold in some surfing news in Brazil.
18 year old American Caitlin Simmers has claimed victory at the Viva Rio Pro.
She beat fellow American Sawyer Lindblad convincingly in the final,
finishing with a combined score of 15.5.
Aussie Olympic hopeful Molly Picklin was eliminated by Gabby Bryan in the quarterfinals.
So just a quick little how to give us and it because surfing in the Olympics,
they're going to be in.
Tahiti cannot wait how it's going to be beautiful.
It's going to be amazing.
But for people who might not watch surfing regularly and who are going to be engaged in the Olympics and hopefully forevermore,
give us a breakdown of how the scoring and the situations actually work.
All right.
So according to the World Surf League,
here are a few little guidelines slash rules.
So a panel of judges to sex the sex,
the surfers performances,
heat times vary.
I think normally they're kind of 30 minutes.
Usually have two surfers in the in the water at once.
So if you against each other away,
be scored.
On a scale of one to 10 and they use two decimal places surface lock in their two high scoring way.
So you can go out there and catch 15 waves.
They just take your two high scoring waves from those 15 for each ride.
The highest and lowest scores are discounted and the surface water,
the average of the remaining three scores.
So you'll have five judges.
Oh yeah.
So if you have five judges and you get 88876 or 97,
they'll take the three eights.
Yes,
got you.
Yeah,
all the average of the three eights.
There are no limits to the number of waves that can be written.
So as I said,
you can go ham.
The perfect heat is when a surfer gets a total score,
obviously of 20 points.
A few of them have happened and they're pretty amazing and I'm hoping there'll be one at Chapu.
So there are a couple of things that surfers can do to increase their chances of getting that magical perfect heat.
So the way the judges kind of score is that it's based on commitment and degree of difficulty.
So those commitment in regards to pulling into the heavier sections and things like that,
like where the wave is the biggest,
scariest,
gnarliest.
That was a lot of lingo.
They're obviously they award innovative and progressive maneuvers,
combination of major maneuvers and the variety of maneuvers.
And I think one of the most important things is the speed,
the power and the flow.
It's how it's all put together.
I love how your body language changed as you said that you're the turtle from finding Nemo.
I am the turtle dude.
Great breakdown.
Yeah.
Um,
if you haven't watched any surfing,
I think during the Olympics,
it would be a great time to tune in because it will be in one of the most beautiful and heaviest waves of consequences on the planet.
Have we had our team confirmed?
Aussie surfers?
Yes,
it's Tyler and Molly.
Love that.
In basketball,
Australia's under 18 gems have gone back to back with an incredible stand against China in the final of the FIBA under 18 Women's Asia Cup,
outlasting the host nation 96 to 79.
Saffron Shields rounded out.
An amazing tournament with 31 points and 15 rebounds.
Monique Babongi had 23 points and Monique Williams had 12.
Australia's Saffron Shields and Lara Somfai were named in the tournament all star five.
Whilst China's seven foot three star,
Zhu Jiang was named a tournament MVP and despite her team's loss clocked up 42 points and 14 rebounds in the final.
Okay,
so we've all seen the footage going around on Instagram.
I don't think everyone has.
We need to post it.
Woo.
She is tall.
Seven foot three.
She's huge and good luck to anyone trying to guard her in the paint.
It's hopeless.
I've got a question for you under 18s.
You might not know this,
but you did play basketball for someone.
Um,
is it a,
is that,
um,
ring lower?
No.
The normal?
No.
My God,
she was literally just putting it in.
Yeah,
because she's that close to the ring.
That is madness.
Yeah,
absolutely.
It was impossible to guard.
So we still won.
She scored 42 points and we still won.
Yeah,
I love that.
Go the girls.
I think you just got to be fast in transition against someone like her and just accept that
she's going to score a lot of points.
Yeah.
Make sure you do the same on the other end.
Yeah,
very true.
Let's take a look at the key story.
So let's talk about merch.
Let's I love talking about much.
I love,
we love much.
Well,
we do.
No,
we do.
We absolutely,
we absolutely love much.
Sometimes it stresses me out a bit and you're telling me what to do with my,
with our match,
but that's a whole nother story.
Let's talk about actual available merchant.
And to be fair,
when we talk about much,
it's probably one of the reasons why we do love providing much to the people,
because you can't get it.
So a new study by Klana and the sports innovation lab has found that the value of
the women's sports merchandise market is worth 4 billion us dollars every single
year.
Invest in women's sport people.
The new study titled rep her revealing the unmet demand for women's sports
merchandise,
looked at merchandise by using surveys of fans and Klana purchasing trends,
as well as analysis of transaction data products in stores and Google trends.
Megan and Goki head of B2C Klana marketing.
What does B2C stand for?
Business to consumer.
Yeah.
Good.
I think you're so good at anagrams.
North American UK spoke UK stands for United kingdom spoke to the results.
Just in case anyone was wondering on par with our intelligence spoke to the results.
When she said,
we believe if fans can rep their favorite teams and athletes,
then it will be hard to slow the progress.
Athletes are making.
On the court ice and wherever they play.
If you can see it,
you can play it and you can certainly want to be it wearing your team.
Your athlete is all about driving home that pride and that association that comes with fandom.
I love it.
If 4 billion be with a B dollars wasn't enough.
Here are some other insane stats that the report uncovered.
60% of women's sports fans have wanted to buy merchandise,
but couldn't because of a lack of inventory present bears raising.
And that's happened.
Multiple times,
right?
Absolutely.
79% of fans.
So they would buy more women's sports merchandise if it was available for every nine pieces of merchandise for men's sport.
There's one for women's sport,
nine to one stupid,
not enough.
There is a particularly glaring disparity in hats with 66 times more NBA options than WNBA offerings.
Speaking is a very keen hat wearer.
Also totally aware of that.
Yeah.
Prime.
Target of study.
I need managers because I can't be able to do my hair a lot.
Yeah.
Fair enough.
67% have bought women's sports merch without attending a live sporting event.
That number is mind blowing.
That's an interesting step because that is one that speaks to the willingness for women's sports fan to invest,
even if they can't get to the game.
Yeah, like they're actually there's a altruistic kind of need to an understanding that they want to grow the game.
And here's a way that they can actually tangibly do it,
which I think is,
you know,
and then we're hamstrung because we can't.
Ridiculous.
Gina Waldhorn,
sports innovation labs,
chief marketing officer.
What's that one?
CMO.
We all knew she said because of the sold out inventory that there was more demand than supply,
but the just how much that 60% went to buy and couldn't,
I just felt was astronomical.
I can't think of another industry that wouldn't resolve that immediately.
Bang on Gina.
Yeah, Gina.
How good the report also determined that given the lack of teams across leagues,
and the geographical restrictions that currently exist within women's professional sports,
women's sports fans rely on merchandise purchasing best,
you're on to it,
but they can't support their favorite team and athletes in real life.
Exactly.
So yeah,
that's what I said.
Yeah.
Angelo Ruggiero.
Thank you.
Angelo Ruggiero,
the Hall of Fame ice hockey player who is co-founder of Sports Innovation Lab,
told USA Today Sports there's a big market here,
and like everything else in women's sport,
it has been under-deserved.
It is undeserved,
misunderstood,
and there's things we can do to fix it very easily.
You're a walking billboard when you have a jersey on,
that is free marketing.
So you're only leaving money on the table.
I think that's a really important one that if I was a partner of a women's sporting team,
I'd be demanding they actually produce more merchandise.
Are you hinting to me about TFAP's merch?
Maybe,
but honestly,
like,
I mean,
obviously we've spoken a lot this year about Kate and Clark.
She's an easy example.
To speak to her jersey,
her singlet was made available,
but not actually going to be ready until August.
How?
How are you not rushing that through?
If I'm the majority,
any of the sponsors on the Indiana Fever singlet right now,
I'd be furious at the Indiana Fever and being like,
hang on,
there could be people walking around America,
the world wearing our name.
And because you haven't produced enough merch,
it's not happening.
And then next year,
so say,
say they had actually done a good job of getting the jerseys out next year when
the commercial partners are going to sign the deals with those sponsors.
And they're like,
we've got this many thousands,
tens of thousands,
hundreds of thousands of people wearing this Jersey with your branding on it.
This is how much it's going to cost you this year to sponsor the team.
Great bargaining tool.
Thank you.
You should work in marketing.
Thank you so much.
Angela,
we want to say fans are starved for options and are willing and able to spend
with companies that show up authentically as part of the community fans sniff out
bad actors that shrink and pink their offerings from men's to women's to be
successful,
truly invest,
and you'll be rewarded by the community.
I love that Forbes report to that such low stock for such high demand makes it
really difficult to actually calculate demand.
I think that's really important.
So you actually don't know this could be even greater than what it is.
They also said the same goes with viewership.
If fans are only presented with limited watching options,
the outcomes are not a true reflection of the demand.
Yeah.
Common sense.
So true.
So let's take a look at what to watch.
Wimbledon is back.
There's all of the nighttime sports are on at the moment.
It's very fun.
And it's just going to continue into the Olympics.
Exhausting.
It's very exhausting.
The all England tennis club is back with just 12 days between the final and the start of
the Olympics.
It's going to be a very interesting one.
The resurgent I Tomlanovic is among three Australians in the women's singles main draw
this year alongside Daria Saville and Olivia Gadecki.
But world number one,
Iga Swiatek of Poland will be on the hunt for her maiden Grand Slam on grass.
World number nine,
Eleanor Perez will lead the Australian charge in the women's doubles with American
partner,
Nicole Melchior Martinez.
You can catch all the action live and free on the Nine Network every night for the next
two weeks with action beginning around 8pm.
Very exciting.
How good.
In basketball,
Basketball Australia in partnership with Visit Victoria this week hosting a Ballen
24.
Ballen.
Ballen,
a major international series featuring Australia's top teams against China and Japan at John
Kane Arena starting on Tuesday over four nights.
This is like,
this is really cool the way they've done this.
The Opals,
