welcome to the wrap a weekly podcast covering women's sports news bears what have we got
around the grounds this week the tillies have signed off on 2024 with two wins kayla george
has broken the 5 000 point barrier in the wnbl how good so good and elise perry dominates game
two of the odi series against india for the key story we'll discuss the big money earners and a
new report dollar dollar bills and a new report that calls women's sport not a moment a movement
i really like that did that come out of the world cup fifa world cup i believe so or was it the
basketball stuff was it the caitlyn clark era it's tough to say we'll go with both let's roll with
that my name is chloe dalton i'm joined every week on the show by my co-host bez this is our
last podcast of 2024 i feel a little bit sad about it yeah i'm a bit sad about it too we're going to
be taking a bit of time
off a bit of a summer break a bit of a summer break a bit of a you need to be a mom for a bit
yeah yeah yeah um we'll be back start of feb start of feb so enjoy your summers everyone
hope sounds good to you yeah great and you've got time get online and buy some tfap merch
for your nearest and dearest oh yeah the kids book get online for the a to z of who i could

present order before december 19th use the code a to z under the tree buy two books you can get
free shipping in australia get on that we're recording on gadigal land let's take a look
around the grounds i forgot to say about the book actually i'll also sign a personalized note so
when you order the book you can put your kids names in there and i'll write a little letter to
them she's gonna have some hand cramps i know let's take a look around the grounds in football
the matildas have wrapped up 2024 with two
solid wins over chinese taipei last week with a number of european players heading back to their
respective teams a chance of blood some new players was presented those new toy tillies
they really took their chance didn't they they sure did as if you wouldn't though yeah i mean
they'd be nervous but it's the time to do it on wednesday night interim coach tom samani selected
five rookies and eight players with fewer than 10 caps who took the field at some point during the
three-one win
goal scorers sean fryer natasha prior briley henry all registered their first tillies goal and all
three are products of the a league good news story for a league absolutely tash prize goal highlighted
her incredible comeback story this was a this was a really cool story wasn't it six years ago
the then 21 year old suffered a major concussion while playing for canberra united and after her
sixth concussion in december 2018 she was forced into retirement that's a solid number of concussions
isn't it
especially for someone so young yes she was sitting in the stands watching the 2023 women's
world cup when she thought she might have one more shot at it 18 months later she debuted for the
matildas and got herself on the score sheet she commented on her journey saying coming back last
season properly to the jets for a proper full season and again this year then obviously being
called in to the matildas it's been a long journey but it's also happened quite quickly i feel like
she must be kind of reflecting on the fact that she started playing six years ago and then obviously
had that time off and then she was able to get back on the field and she was able to get back on the
field and then she was able to get back on the field and then she was able to get back on the field
so it's been a long time but also the ascension into the matildas team has been quite quick
she also is just good though because you can't have that much time off and then make the national
team she's also just good like it's a very competitive national team i agree with you
thanks on saturday night there were another two debutants with goalkeeper chloe lincoln and
midfielder laura hughes making their debuts from the bench claire pulkinghorn started the match in
what was her final appearance on saturday night there were another two debutants with goalkeeper
for the tillies they were quick to get on the scoreboard with leah davidson scoring her first
international goal in the sixth minute there were five more tillies on the score sheet by full time
and the six nil victory was a fitting way to end the year the tillies will play next february
at the she believes cup which we chatted about which is quite exciting in the united states and
they may very well have a new head coach by that point in time i hope they have a new head coach
by that time i think interim coach obviously he's doing a great job but there's some big things on
the horizon they need to find themselves a head coach and get settled in and have that embedded
and you don't think he could be the long-term option he might be but but they're gonna lock
it in they need to lock it in exactly yeah okay so samani speaking of him he hasn't held back
when sharing his view on the development of the wider matilda squad he told me during the lead
up to the chinese taipei matches the matildas have had a very consistent squad for four years
and what's happened with that is it hasn't allowed opportunities for other players one of the key
things as a national team coach is you've got to play for the present but plan for the future
and i think in all fairness i don't think we've planned for the future well enough we do need to
look at expanding the competition within what i would call the matildas program it's a really
interesting one so you think about that how does that what does that look like you know at the end
of the day you can only pick a squad for each tilly's match so you know he's probably
had a crack at gustafsson saying he hasn't tried enough different combinations and he's really
just settled on on a smaller squad so it's tough like i think home world cup was the pinnacle
i just think like in my opinion that takes priority over too much future planning i think
once the world cup cycle finishes like they're doing now then you blood the new players i don't
know i agree in the cricket in cricket elise perry and george devol put on a batting clinic
on saturday sunday at allen borderfield vol in only her second match in the aussie colors
scored 101 off just 87 deliveries how good alongside her was the goat who smashed a record
breaking six sixes in her innings of 105 off just 75 balls the aussies finished with an imposing
score of eight for 371 it was their third highest total ever in an odi wow yeah wow india needed to
pull off the highest chase in women's odi history to keep the series alive
after going down in game one earlier in the week but they fell well short and were dismissed for
249 annabelle sutherland boldwell taking four for 38 perry just keeps hitting records like a fine
wine her wall on sunday saw her become the first woman to complete the double of 7 000 runs and
300 wickets in international cricket and she also became the fourth australian woman to score 4 000
odi runs wow and just on that game one it was the megan shucho
nice she registered her maiden at five wicket hall taking five for 19 and restricted india or
helped to restrict india to a tiny total of 100 tiny total on debutant vol georgia vol she posted
an unbeaten 46 off 42 balls to ensure the aussies reached the target inside 17 overs
in rugby union our aussie sevens team couldn't reproduce their dubai form in cape town over
the weekend they were beaten by the usa 24 to 19 after a last-minute win in the second half of the
last-minute try to america's nia tolliver who was a massive threat with her parents beat all match
she's strong isn't she strong she's got some good leg drive you can't be tackling her with your
hands you need to be tackling her with your shoulder and she just yeah unfortunately the
aussies found out the hard way when tolliver ran through leaving three aussies grasping
and she raced away to score the winner that loss sent them to the third place playoff where they
went down 17 14 to france
to finish fourth in the final new zealand were too good for the usa winning 26 to 12 to take
home the cape town title and in the 15s game world rugby have announced that they have sold
220 000 tickets to the 2025 world's cup to be held in england next year that number surpasses the
150 000 sold in 2021 for the world cup in new zealand the next release of tickets will be in
february next year so that 220 000 you're included in those numbers bez you will be there
for how many matches all australia matches quarter final semi-final final how good
and yeah so 220 000 tickets and that's pre-sale pre-sale more to come and people missing out
heaps of people missing out yeah so we i got every single ticket i applied for did you use
your t-back credentials no i didn't know we we did go i went cheap though because i figured i
might get some cheap seats i might get it i might get a an upgraded guernsey
closer to the date but i wanted to secure some tickets so we just went category c for them all
um great and we've got them all yeah but some of the girls parents and things missed out on
category a tickets how does that work do players get tickets for family they do but i'm not sure
they get enough so yeah people always buy extras just in case uh more exciting world cup news
elona ma has confirmed she's having a crack at representing the us at the 2025 world cup
signing a contract with the bristol bears to play in the pwr
competition so that's in the uk since the announcement the club has had to move her
potential debut match from shaftsbury park to the following day at ashton gate on january 5th
due to unprecedented demand in tickets shaftsbury park capacity 2000 250 of which is seated
ashton gate capacity 27 000 so i want to go to that game same and the following on the bristol
bears uh insta account has more than doubled what's it up to now i don't know why you talk
next story i'm gonna look it up skyrocketing she is absolute box office yes she is and i can't wait
to see her play in some snow sports last week jakara anthony set a new benchmark for australian
winter athletes on podiums at world cup events when she won silver in the moguls this week she
was back on top where she belongs winning the 20th her 23rd world cup event of her career in
sweden she's a freak the reigning world cup champion produced the goods in the final run
at finishing with her highest score of the season so far
earning 82.94 from the judges french athlete perrine lafont who got the better of anthony
at the previous event was second with a score of 80.89 uh bristol bears up to 60.7 000 followers
i think pre alone they're at about 23 so they've almost tripled huge she is a triple threat follow
from the tfap account while i'm there for the bristol bears adding another follower to your
60 000 at bristol bears in wmbl in basketball the
flames have made it two wins on the trot in a game where kayla george became just the fourth
player in wnbl history to score 5 000 points that's a milestone it's huge isn't it the flames
got over the perth links in sydney 86 to 75 but all the attention was deservedly on george who
joins an elite list of basketball athletes to break the barrier suzy bakovich who finished
her career with 5 843 rachel spawn 5 823 and shelly sandy
5 204 are the only other players to bring up the milestone in the league's 45 year existence
i wonder how many years kayla's got left i wonder if she could crack the six
suzy bakovich center yeah rachel spawn forward maybe four shelly sandy i don't know neither
that's interesting though like you for some reason i just feel like shooting
shooting guards are going to be the high scorers maybe it's higher percentage
under the rim yeah true put backs big girls getting it done george led the way with 28
points 14 rebounds three blocks one assist and one steal goodness me and in the usa steph talbot
was picked up by new wnba franchise the golden state valkyries that's cool i want to be part
of that team i love the valkyries the league held an expansion draft where the wnba's 13th
organization had the opportunity to draft up one player from each of the three teams
the pre-existing 12 teams teams had to nominate six players that were safe from drafting all other
players on existing rosters were fair game it's so brutal it's wild and let's talk about the fact
that this used to happen in the nwsl yeah and the teams used to release the players that were
protected or safe and it caused massive dramas in the change rooms as it potentially would like
what do you mean so they used to actually the teams would say so for instance angel city would
say here's our list i think it was
more than six obviously it's the biggest squad size but here's our list of players you can't
touch in this expansion draft you can touch these ones and so the ones that weren't picked up would
obviously feel a bit unloved and god yeah cause some real dramas yeah for sure this the the top
six for these the wnba teams was kept quiet oh sorry when you said they released i think when
they released them from the club they released it publicly yeah they shared it that's unhealthy
it's not good is it whoa but well steph talbot knows that she wasn't protected
now because she got picked up but she's moving up the coast how good from the la sparks and she
had a good season with the la sparks i hope she kills it with the valkyries they got some pretty
cool branding also um canada's toronto tempo tempo how do we feel about that i don't know
i'm not sure about it what does a tempo look like it's got like a few lines i think from what i saw
of the logo i don't know call me old school i don't mind uh i'm about an animal or a
i don't know why i just am i can hear my screaming screaming baby he's talking he's just saying i'm
hungry he's contributing to the podcast let's go with that i asked him before what he's bringing
to the podcast cries here it is here are the cries in some a-league news adelaide united posted a two
nil win over the newcastle jets newcastle jets on sunday afternoon with fiona warts scoring on
either side of halftime to take her season tally to six goals in five games the win moved the
reds to third on the ladder and we have some amazing adelaide united jerseys to give away
yeah they say tfap on them the signs are epic they're so good so keep an eye on our socials
we'll let you know how you can get your hands on these limited edition one time only never made
before special pieces of merchandise a bit of research news we know we love stats at tfap
a study by research and content agency red torch titled
beautiful
data women focused insight from the paris 2024 olympic games showed that female olympians
featured in fewer paris 2024 focused news articles but generated greater social engagement than their
male counterparts before i get into the data why is it called beautiful data is it because it's
about women because i don't like it if it is no it's a whole they they have a whole series of
reports called beautiful data okay so it's not just for the women because that would make me
quite angry
a little bit nauseous as well when i first read it okay i'm really glad we've clarified well done
red torch i take it back the stats from the report tell us female athletes were covered in 43 percent
of news coverage while male athletes were the focus of 57 percent of all stories that's dumb
because i know australian athletes women dominated that's dumb but even like if we're talking us i
global yeah like even the u.s. like come on simone byles as if she's gonna be me don't connect with us
but it's us even if we're talking about us it's us like is this global yeah like even the u.s. like come
on and even if it's the current season we're just going to be talking about it and we're talking about this
and we're talking about this as the world's biggest sport is it's a boom and a boom and that's why i love these and i hope everybody is on top of you guys
biles as if she was not 97 the gender imbalance in news coverage was greatest across olympic tv
broadcasters with just 39 of stories featuring female olympians social content produced by
female olympians drove 53 of total engagement across tiktok and instagram content produced
by international federations and brands also favored male olympians in 59 and 58 respectively
just be better just be better the women are so good at the olympics catch up guys and as we've
discussed paris 2024 was the first gender equal olympic games in history due to distribution of
an equal number of quota places by the ioc however again we can see that women competing at the games
needed to resort to their own social media channels to ensure they receive the media
attention they deserve yeah we see it time and time again don't we yeah we put a quote up from
malona marr this morning on instapage great quote and she was like yeah i don't
you
want to have to be doing all of this but i'm not earning the money from rugby so this is my
livelihood i'm out here selling myself yeah jess rewis head of communications and women's sport
lead at red torch said red torch's beautiful data study highlights that the global sports
industry still has some way to go to satisfy the growing demand for women's sports content
clearly progress has been made as shown by the first ever gender equal olympics in paris
but all stakeholders have a responsibility to do more it's very encouraging that the rising
popularity of women's sport shows positive momentum as female athletes achieve more social
media engagement across different online platforms hopefully this data will motivate broadcasters
federations and brands to continue to invest in women's sport coverage so the next generation
of athletes and fans can be inspired i wonder if you're going to work out what i'm going to say
at the end of this next conclusion from the report championing balance representation for
female athletes doesn't just enhance audience engagement it strengthens brand impact and
impact and meets the
growing demand for inclusivity in sport by celebrating women's achievements and amplifying
their visibility we can create a virtuous cycle that benefits athletes fans brands and the entire
sports community no what are you gonna say just a phrase that we quite like a rising tide oh
yes that one which hat you got on and you designed it look at you usually she's not allowed as part
of the design process look i wasn't i didn't design it i came up with the concept and i begged
to have a boat included on it yeah you did that's it that's all we got get your hats people get them
they're a great hat let's take a look at the key story bit of dollars and common sense you see what
i did that podcast yeah i see it dollars and common sense common sense i like it sportico
released a list of the 15 highest paid female athletes last week and the media company noted
that record tv ratings attendance revenue sponsorships and franchise valuations across
multiple sports media companies have been able to increase the number of female athletes in the
world's 15 highest paid female athletes will earn an estimated u.s 221 million dollars in 2024
up 27 percent against last year it's a big jump that's a good increase isn't it 11 athletes made
at least 10 million u.s dollars compared with six in 2023 i love that it's like that discussion
around the translation because it that's exactly what it's showing we've seen kind of this boom
in all the categories around viewership endorsements nil blah blah blah blah and now
we're seeing it translate into their pockets into dollar earnings i'm here for it coco pop golf
yes when i was in adelaide i had coco pops for breakfast because it's on holidays thing
and i just thought of coco golf i'm telling you at coco golf get the connect she needs to make it
happen coco golf ranks number one for the second straight year with u.s 30.4 million dollars
money endorsements sorry to interrupt you designed one hat in the middle of the night
sunday you're the head of marketing for coco continue i'm the ideas person
not really tennis was again the dominant sport in the list providing nine athletes and again like
so tennis obviously has huge prize money totals thank you billie jenking respect like literally
yeah um golf had three players in top 15 while skiing basketball and gymnastics each had one
simone biles came in at ninth earning u.s 11 million dollars from endorsements alone
dwarfing her prize money total
just u.s 135k she was just a head of basketball phenom caitlyn clark who earned just u.s 100k in
salary but also brought home u.s 11 million in endorsements the salary part is just absurd when
you compare it isn't it wild few people asking questions about sabrina unescu because her nike
deal i think there was talk about it being around 20 mil but that was a multi-year deal that's right
i think it i think she was about six million dollars this year yeah okay and i think we'll
see her creep up the list in years to come
that's probably a heavily back-ended deal especially with the post that we did on tfap
the other day second most worn shoe by the boys yeah in the nba it's a nice shoe there's some
ordinary color color ways of it but in general my shoe again you should give feedback directly
to sabrina she's feeling very confident today she does have a green and yellow colorway which
is obviously a nod to her oregon university days but i like to think i like to think it's
an australian nod sure let's go with that
sportico also reported on a new study the women's sports opportunity from horizon sports and
experiences the report calls women's sport not a moment a movement and speaks to three factors
that position women's sport as a prime area for growth and investment they are the diverse and
valuable audience women's sports offers brands the opportunity to tap into a more dynamic
valuable and fiercely loyal fan base we are fiercely loyal fiercely
on the rise the women's sport market grew 30 percent in the last year driven by greater
investments in sponsorship broadcasting and commercial partnerships this increase comes
as a direct result of increased viewership attendance and engagement across the women's
sports landscape and powerful roi opportunities women's sports still only represents a small
two to four percent piece of the u.s 500 billion dollar global sports market whoa with a lower
number of sponsors relative to men's sports women's sports offer brands the opportunity
to show up in powerful authentic ways that resonate with key consumer values and at a lower price point
love it hs and ease research shows that 67 of women's sports fans make a point to support
brands that sponsor their favorite teams or athletes 67 so good you'd be ridiculous not
to sponsor women's sports very silly they know that the relative youth of women's competitions
the nba had a five decade head start versus the wnba for example means there is less brand clutter
and less interest of marketers to compete against there is also for the time being
lower costs to get involved as you said bez resulting in a higher return on investment
common sense invest in women's sport invest in women's sports let's take a look at what
to watch final game of the three odi series for our aussie cricketers will be against
india on wednesday at the waka the match will start at 3 20 p.m aedt and we'll be live on
the seven network and caro sports in round six of the ailey the western sydney wanderers

paramount plus and 10 play and the undefeated bendigo spirit they're going all right aren't
they they are at home to the townsville fire who i think are currently in third so it should
be a good matchup on saturday at red energy arena tip off is 5 p.m aedt and you can watch

my t-fat team but all of you who listen every single time i'll see you next time on the
single week we see you we're so thankful for this incredible community of people it's been
a ridiculously good year for women's sport and we cannot wait for 2025 we've got some pretty
exciting things in store for you guys i think the most exciting thing is every year it's a
good year and it's getting better all the time well said bye
